چکیده

The Metrology Light Source (MLS), situated in Berlin (Germany) is owned by the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt andwas built / is operated by theHelmholtz-Zentrum Berlin. It is an electron storage ring operating from 105MeV to 630MeV. The MLS serves as the national primary source standard from the near infrared to the extreme ultraviolet spectral region [1]. Users of synchrotron radiation demand an improved lifetime which is Touschek dominated at the MLS. A possible solution to meet this demand is to lengthen the electron bunches. By installing a Robinson Wiggler (RW), damping effects can be transferred from the longitudinal to the horizontal plane [2, 3], thereby increasing the energy spread and reducing the horizontal emittance. By varying the energy spread, the bunch length can be increased and thus the scattering rate decreased, resulting in an improved lifetime. According to preliminary estimations a considerable increase in lifetime seems achievable, while preserving the source size.

Status of the Robinson Wiggler Project at the Metrology Light Source

The beam lifetime in electron storage rings concerns machines running in decay mode as well as machines doing topup. A standard procedure to increase the lifetime is via bunch lengthening as the lifetime depends on the electron density in the bunch. Bunch lengthening is typically achieved with higher harmonic (Landau) cavities. As noted in [1], there are several advantages in using a different ...

Reducing Hls-ii Emittance by Radiation Damping Partition Factor Exchange∗

In this paper, we present some preliminary studies on reducing the emittance of the Hefei light source II (HLS-II) storage ring by redistributing the synchrotron damping partition factor using a Robinson wiggler. The studies demonstrate that it is possible to reduce the emittance by 50% using a 2-meter long wiggler on a rematched lattice. This encouraging result suggests a feasible option to si...

Characterization of a Novel Elliptically Polarized Wiggler

We report on the initial characterization of an elliptically polarized wiggler built by a collaboration between the Advanced Photon Source, the Institute of Nuclear Physics, and the National Synchrotron Light Source. The wiggler has recently been installed in the X13 straight section of the NSLS X-Ray ring. The device consists of a vertical permanent-magnet wiggler and a horizontal electromagne...

A Preliminary Report from Louisiana State University Camd Storage Ring Operating with an 11 Pole 7.5 Tesla Wiggler

Louisiana State University installed a 7.5 T superconducting wiggler in May 2013 on the electron storage ring located at the Bennett Johnson, Sr. Center for Advanced Microstructures and Devices (CAMD). The wiggler’s influence on betatron tunes and functions, orbit, lifetime, performance, and other relevant beam parameters are described. We further comment on device operations and modifications ...
